A fine 18thC Swedish straw work box, dating to approximately the 1750s to 1770s. The box has an octagonal wooden carcass skilfully covered with straw marquetry featuring straws in various shades and thicknesses. The lid is decorated with a city scene, possibly based on Stockholm. Above this is a crown topped with a cross flanked by a pair of lions rampant with their tongues out, from the crest of King Adolf Frederick of Sweden (1710-1771). The lid has a chevron patterned border round the edge. The sides of the box feature alternating zig-zag and checkered panels. The front panel includes a heart which is complete when the lid is in place. The inside of the box is lined with pink paper, and the base is covered with blue paper.

The box is in good condition for its age with a little minor wear commensurate with its age.

King Adolf Frederick was on the Swedish throne from 1751 to 1771. This piece was produced either during his reign or possibly shortly after his death. It is a rare survivor of 18thC Swedish folk art.
