A beautiful portrait in oils entitled 'Cornish Fisher', by the Newlyn School artist David Wood Haddon (1859-1914). Haddon specialised in portraits of members of the fishing community in the Newlyn area of Cornwall and this painting is typical of his work. It is a particularly nice example, showing an old seadog with a kindly, weather-beaten face. He is wearing his work clothing and smoking a clay pipe. Haddon's signature is in the bottom lefthand corner. This piece dates to approximately the late 19th century. The painting is in its original gilt frame with title label at the bottom, and is ready to hang.

The painting is in good clean, original condition. There is minor wear to the frame with a little minor flaking and chipping to the gilt.

David Woods Haddon was born in Birmingham. He was a member of the Newlyn School of painters. He was most active between about 1859 and 1914. He exhibited at the Birmingham Royal School of Artists and the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. He was fairly prolific, producing many portraits of Cornish fisher folk along with other subjects.
