A very attractive Japanese export-ware pencil box dating to the late 19th century Meiji period. The box is made of papier-mâché covered with a rich layer of black lacquer, and with an oriental scene in gilt to the lid. The inner part of the box is divided into two compartments, and slides out of the box to allow access.
It is in good condition with minor wear commensurate with its age.
