A pair of German prisoner of war carved ox bone spill vases dating to WW1. German and Italian prisoners interned in POW camps in Britain were permitted to make artistic pieces which they could then trade with guards or visitors for money or food. They used any materials that were available to them in the camps. These pieces. made from discarded animal bones, are distinctly Germanic and examples were produced at many of the POW camps around Britain at the time. This pair is carved with flowers, leaves and buds. They are mounted on dark wooden plinths with textured paper to the bases. They are interesting pieces of trench art or POW work.

They are in generally good original condition but one has some old damage to the top rim.
