Victorian glass pipe frigger

A very fine glass pipe frigger dating to around the 1860s and probably made in either Nailsea or Stourbridge. Friggers are novelty pieces of glassware made by glassblowers at the end of the day to use up any scraps of glass. The glassblowers were allowed to sell such pieces to generate additional income. Pipes like this were often used to decorate the windows of tobacconists but were also popular decorative pieces in the home. Friggers are also known as whimseys or 'end of day' glass.

This fine example is made of cranberry glass with swirls of white threading. There are a few minor inclusions in the glass from when it was made, but otherwise it is in excellent condition.
